Mutual Obligation is a strategy for job seekers which aims to assist them back into the workforce. It encourages more active job search and participation in activities which improve work skills and habits. Individuals claiming benefit from Centrelink are required to undertake a Mutual Obligation activity such as Work for the Dole
or Community Work.
Work for the Dole is an Australian Government initiative . Work for the Dole provides work experience opportunities and activities for eligible job seekers. By participating in a Work for the Dole
activity many unemployed individuals satisfy their mutual obligation and give something back to the community in return for their unemployment benefit.
Work for the Dole is one of many ways that individuals can meet their Mutual Obligation and is funded by the Commonwealth Government's Department of Education and Workplace Relations (DEWR). JOB futures Tasmania has a contract with DEWR to deliver Work for the Dole services as a Community Work Coordinator. JOB futures was the winner of the Best Work for the Dole Project in 2004.
JOB futures Tasmania has a wide range of Work for the Dole activities which

Community Work allows people to work in an approved volunteer organisation
and is another way to undertake Mutual Obligation.
The voluntary work undertaken by job seekers and income support recipients need
to be registered and monitored by a Community Work Coordinator such as JOB
futures and must be of benefit to both the community and the participant and
not result in any financial payment to the participant over and above their
income support.
